James Cameron has made it clear that we are getting much more than the initially planned trilogy for Avatar. It was planned that the first sequel would release in December 2018, followed by three more sequels in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
Unfortunately, it looks like that release date might not be very realistic. According to Sigourney Weaver, who played a role in the first film and will be in the second film, it appears as though we won't be sticking to that schedule.
"We haven't started it, so I don't know how realistic that date is, but I think it's going to be very exciting. I've read three of the four sequel's scripts, and they're even more extraordinary than the first one," said Weaver to The Hollywood Reporter.
If what Weaver says is true, then the rest of the films in the series will be pushed back as well. Cameron has admitted to having overwritten the sequels, but he clarified that he did so because it was the best way to show the 'family saga' that will be featured throughout the franchise.
