For nearly a decade, the entire MCU has been building to Avengers: Infinity War and its untitled sequel. The Avengers will finally go face to face with Thanos, an alien who has been searching for the Infinity Gems for years so he can become one of the most powerful beings alive. Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 have been talked about as a pair and almost like they're just one big movie. It seems that plan has slowly changed over time, though.
Originally announced as Avengers: Infinity War parts 1 and 2, Marvel began making changes to make sure the movies feel more standalone and less like one big movie stretched out into two. The two movies were originally planned to be shot at the same time, but that plan has changed according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige.
"We’re doing them one right after another… It became too complicated to cross-board them like that, and we found ourselves – again, something would always pay the price. We wanted to be able to focus and shoot one movie and then focus and shoot another movie."
Avengers 4 will begin shooting in August, so it's not like there will be a major gap between production on each film. It's probably the best that they don't cross streams here as we've all seen superhero movies ruined because there was too much going on both on screen and behind the scenes.
Avengers: Infinity War is set to release in May of 2018 with the sequel following in May of 2019.
