Playtonic, a team of developers that formerly worked at Rare, have revealed the main characters of the Banjo-Kazooie spiritual successor, Yooka-Laylee. The team working on the game previously worked on bringing Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country to life — two fantastice games, so there's definitely hope for Yooka-Laylee.
The game's name is founded on the two main characters (like Banjo, the bear, and Kazooie, the bird): Yooka is the chameleon and Laylee is the bat.
Traversing the world with the duo will rely on the core 3D platforming mechanics that were a staple of the Banjo-Kazooie series. Yooka will use his tongue as a grappling hook and Laylee has the ability to pick Yooka up and fly for a short period.
Yooka-Laylee will be launching on Kickstarter tomorrow May 1st. Backers will be able to grab the finished copy of the game by putting $15 towards its development. There will be tons of incentives to give the team more than just $15 though, there are soundtracks (which will be awesome because the musical team is awesome), art books, and a special 64-bit special edition that harkens to the N64 days. If Playtonic's first project gets fully funded (I hope it does) it will release on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Wii U, and Windows/Mac.
I've been so excited for this game for so long, I'm totally going to back it (just so you know).
