There's been a mix of information on the future of Batfleck over the past few months. It all started when Ben Affleck, who was originally supposed to write and direct the standalone Batman film, dropped out from directing for reasons including his personal health. The standalone Batman film already has a new director, War for the Planet of the Apes' director Matt Reeves, and an all-new script.
While Reeves and WB are keen on keeping Affleck as Batman, there are major rumors floating around suggesting that he's going to retire after Justice League. The rumors began to gain real traction last month, which lead to Affleck making a very public statement on how much enthusiasm he has for the character and the DC universe, but he didn't deny anything.
Recently, Affleck's brother, Casey Affleck, said Batfleck would no longer be a thing, then quickly backtracked. Now our Batfleck has come out from the woodwork to speak on what we can expect from Batman in Justice League.
“He’s put in this position of having to reach out, find other people, convincing them to do something,” said Affleck to EW. “Part of the drama of the movie is the question of whether or not the team is going to come together. It’s very different from the tenor of the last movie.”
The tone won't be the only difference, Batman will be different too.
“BvS departed a little bit from the traditional Batman,” says Affleck. “He started out with all this rage directed at Superman, because of his coworkers who had died in the fight Superman had with Zod.” For Affleck, most of the hero’s ensuing actions were defined by barely-repressed fury – in contrast to the Batman we meet in Justice League. “He was holding on to a lot of anger, in a little bit of an irrational way,” Affleck says. “Whereas this is a much more traditional Batman. He’s heroic. He does things in his own way, but he wants to save people, help people.”
Basically, everyone who threw a fit over Batman being a bit more violent than usual can rest assured that he's going to be much more "heroic" and "traditional."
