Battle Royale sensation PUBG has sold more than 70 million copies

It only took them three years

One of the most popular games of the past generation and the harbinger of an entirely new game genre, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or short PUBG, has been sold more than 70 million times since its launch just three years ago.

The news comes via Gameindustry.biz and it marks an official statement in regard to PUBG Corporation’s insane success. While the game was for a long while the talk of the town among gamers, one might have forgotten that it’s still to this day a massive juggernaut in the multiplayer gaming scene.

Indeed, the battle royale genre of online shooters was basically invented in its modern form by PUBG in the first place. Other games followed soon after, with Epic Games’ Fortnite stealing a lot of thunder from its inspiration. It sure didn’t hurt that it’s free-to-play, too.

But exactly that aspect makes the stat so fascinating. When there are high-quality free alternatives, it’s nothing short of spectacular to achieve more than 70 million sales. And those are across the paid versions obviously on consoles and PC. Just imagine how many more are enjoying it for free on their smartphones!

It also puts things into perspective just how massive PUBG truly is when you remember that GTA V needed two console generations and seven years to claim the throne of the best-selling game and 120m copies sold.

With the developer continuously adding new content in the form of Seasons – Season 8 is just around the corner -, there’s little doubt that PUBG will sooner rather than late crack the 100 million figure in the near future.
