The official Battlefield 1 Twitter account attempted to make a hashtag catch on and it completely backfired. The hashtag in question? #justWWIthings. Oddly enough, the hashtag isn't new – it's been around and used alongside images since July.
The previous tweets weren't met with an uproar, but the latest ones were.
The tweets weren't sent out with just text, they were accompanied by GIFs from Battlefield 1 gameplay, one with a soldier using a flamethrower and the other with soldiers standing in front of a crashing zeppelin.
The tweets have been deleted, but the internet remembers:

The tweets were removed after some internet-goers called them "tasteless" and insensitive. While the internet reacted to the failed memes with a mix of mockery of negativity, EA deleted the tweets then apologized for any "offense" they caused.
“We would like to apologize for any offense caused by content in the last 24 hours posted on the @Battlefield Twitter account. It did not treat the World War 1 era with the respect and sensitivity that we have strived to maintain with the game and our communications.”
It's interesting to see what the internet chooses to be upset about and what it lets slide.
