One of the biggest superhero movies of 2017 is just three months away from release and although there's a lot of hype surrounding it, there's some concern too. Justice League has had a very troubled production and on top of that, the DCEU hasn't had the best critical reception either.
Earlier this year, director Zack Snyder's daughter tragically committed suicide which lead to Snyder walking away from the project during post-production. At the time, principal photography had wrapped and they were in the process of editing the movie and getting ready for reshoots. The Avengers director, Joss Whedon, stepped in to take over for Snyder and fans began to wonder how much of an impact that would have on the movie. Star Ben Affleck recently sat down with Entertainment Weekly to talk about how it has affected the film and what it has been like for him as an actor.
“It’s a little bit unorthodox,” admits Affleck. “Zack had a family tragedy, and stepped off, which was horrible. For the movie, the best person we could’ve possibly found was Joss. We got really lucky that he stepped in.” Affleck, who has directed four films himself described the movie as "an interesting product of two directors, both with kind of unique visions, both with really strong takes. I’ve never had that experience before making a movie. I have to say, I really love working with Zack, and I really love the stuff we’ve done with Joss.”
Rumors suggest that Whedon has kept most of Snyder's action set-pieces intact but has rewritten some dialogue and helped make the movie's narrative flow better between the action sequences. Affleck also addressed the reshoots for the film which are rumored to be fairly extensive, costing Warner Bros. upwards of $25 million.
“I’ve never worked on a movie that didn’t do reshoots,” Affleck says. “Argo, we did reshoots for a week and a half! Four days on Gone Baby Gone!” Affleck also went on to say that despite the rocky start, the DCEU is finding its place and getting on track. “This is a really nice time to work in DC. They’re hitting their stride. They’re getting it right. It’s starting to feel like it’s really working.”
