Best Buy cancels Limited Edition Majora’s Mask 3DS pre-orders

Within in minutes of the day the Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask New Nintendo 3DS edition was revealed, it was sold out at GameStop. Thousands of people flocked to the retailer's website to purchase the limited edition New 3DS, some of which had no intention of using the product, but instead to flip it and sell it for a higher price on eBay or Amazon.

The individuals who chose to sell the limited edition New 3DS on Amazon raised hell. Tons of Amazon users left reviews on how horrible the scalpers were.

It seems as though Best Buy is silently enacting a 'one per household' rule to ordering the handheld. Over night, Best Buy sent emails out to individuals who pre-ordered the handheld notifying them that their pre-order had been canceled. Interestingly enough, this only seems to be affecting individuals who pre-ordered more than one unit with the same credit card or shipping address. A 'one per' rule can be fair, if it is clearly stated when the item is first made available – not after the pre-orders have been made.

Best Buy is offering a $50 discount for anyone that has their pre-order canceled. While the canceled pre-orders might remove some scalpers, it can be taking away the handheld from other members in a household.

Here's what the email looks like:

Hello [NAME]

We're sorry but there is an issue with your pre-order. The popularity of Nintendo 3DS XL Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask Limited Edition Gold/Black exceeded the quantities made available to Best Buy. As a result, we are unable to fulfill all of the pre-orders received. We regret that your particular order has been canceled and we know that this is disappointing. We want to make it up to you by offering a $50 discount that may be used towards the purchase of one of these alternate options, or other products on BestBuy.com

We have reached out Best Buy for clarification on their move to cancel pre-orders.
