Bethesda reveals Fallout Shelter, available tonight on App Store

New free-to-play mobile game with no paywalls

While the highlight of tonight's Bethesda E3 press conference was Fallout 4, the studio revealed something related — a new mobile game called Fallout Shelter.

Inspired by a game called Progress Quest (along with XCOM, FTL, and SimCity), Fallout Shelter is essentially a game in which you make your own vault and act as the Overseer — controlling everything inside.

Bethesda showed off gameplay, which seems a mix of SimCity, XCOM, FTL, and This War of Mine. Basically, you control the people in the vault, and your job is to keep them happy. Each dwellar has full stats and all level up. There are items, outfits, and weapons you can acquire, and these will help you when you send them on quests out in the Wasteland. There's also a resource management aspect of the game, in which you must have the right balance of food, water, and power.

Fallout Shelter will be completely free to play with no paywall timers, and no internet connection required. Building things is instant, as well. The only thing you can pay for — and it's totally optional —  are lunch boxes which reward you with random loot.

Fallout Shelter will be available tonight on the App Store for iOS devices.
