Aside from the daily Xbox 720 rumors that flood nearly every corner of gaming, tech space on the Internet, there’s not a hotter topic than used games and their affect on the video game industry, and today yet another industry giant is voicing their opinion on the matter.
Speaking with Destructiod in an interview focused on how specific games found success, Bethesda Marketing Vice President Pete Hines revealed that their studio has attempted to lessen the impact of used game sales by supporting games with downloadable content that encourages players to hold onto their discs.
“Absolutely it's a concern," Hines said. "We have tried to mitigate it by creating games that offer replayability, by supporting them with DLC that's worth hanging onto the game for, or offering tools that let them take things further."
Admittedly, Hines nodded to the fact that their studio doesn’t have an appropriate proposal to fix the used games issue so that all parties are happy, and that an overall solution for developers and gamers may be significantly hard to come by.
"There's no doubt that being a videogamer is expensive. Games are not cheap to buy because they're expensive to make, and people are looking for ways to keep it affordable," Hines said. "I'm not sure anyone has figured out a solution that works for everyone, and there simply may not be one until someone figures out how to include developers and publishers in the loop on used games sales instead of keeping it all for themselves."
If recent rumors prove to be true, it looks as though the PS4 will be able to play used games; much to the praise of Playstation fans. However, Microsoft gurus may be on edge, as many reports have claimed, including a patent, that the company is investing in technology to block used games altogether on their next-generation console.
