Bioware announces new Mass Effect and new IP as co-founders retire

The world of Bioware is quite shaken up today with two pretty huge announcements. Firstly, co-founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk announced that they are retiring from Bioware, in separate blog posts which can be found HERE and HERE. While it's certainly a surprising move, the duo of doctors have been at it for 20 years.

The bigger and arguably more surprising news is that there is a new Mass Effect game in the works, or at least in the talking stages. While it was no surprise that there would have been more DLC for Mass Effect 3, I don't think anyone expected to hear anything about a completely new Mass Effect game.

In regards to the statement, Casey Hudson said:

But the Mass Effect universe is vast, and Casey and our teams have plans for another full game. “Where to go next?” with such a project has been a question a lot of us have been asking, and we’d all love to hear your ideas.

Does it concern anyone else that they're asking fans what they'd like to see, instead of hopefully having some material of their own? Casey also added:

Both Dragon Age and Mass Effect started as single games but grew into vast universes. But we aren’t stopping there. While Casey continues to oversee the development of our new Mass Effect project, he and his leads are putting together their vision for an all new game set in a fictional universe, built from the bottom-up with all new gaming technology.

So it looks like out of sad news, comes a lot of potentially happy news. We can only hope Bioware stays on track after both Ray and Greg leave, and that they learned from their mistakes, and give any upcoming trilogies a damn fine and satisfying ending.
