BioWare ‘exploring new directions’ with Mass Effect 4

With Commander Shepard's Mass Effect trilogy now concluded, BioWare is "exploring new directions" with the next installment of the franchise.

Speaking on the BioWare blog, BioWare Montreal, the studio taking over main responsibilities for the next Mass Effect game revealed the first bits of information regarding the next installment. The first is that the game will run using an enhanced version of the Frostbite technology, the same engine that powered Battlefield 3.

"The other thing I can tell you is that, while it will be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three games, with the original trilogy now concluded and the switch over to a new engine, we are exploring new directions, both on the gameplay and story fronts," explained BioWare Montreal studio director Yanick Roy.

"You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling."

That's about all Roy had to say aside from that the post was probably going to be the last thing we hear from the studio "for quite a while" – presumably until we get closer to the game's launch. What aspect of the Mass Effect universe would you like to see explored in future games?
