Blizzard is looking to restore classic games like Warcraft 3 and Diablo 2 to their former glory

Don't freak out yet.

Around a year ago, Blizzard updated the Battle.Net launcher with a bunch of backgrounds and icons for Warcraft 3, even though the game currently isn't supported by the launcher (or even some newer versions of Windows). Since then Blizzard has mentioned a rebirth in Warcraft universe, but specifically when speaking on what would come after the conclusion to StarCraft 2 with Legacy of the Void

"It’s very rewarding for us to hear that there’s demand out there for more RTS content in the Warcraft universe so once we’re done with Void I think we’ll get together as a team and talk about what would inspire us to work on next," said Legend of the Void producer Tim Morten. "There’s no question, though, that we’ll consider Warcraft, StarCraft, or even new ideas. Anything is possible."

Well, it looks like Blizzard has plans for StarCraft, Warcraft, and Diablo! According to a hiring post in Blizzard's careers section (via NeoGaf), the developers are hiring programmers and developers to bring StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II to today's standards.

Compelling stories. Intense multiplayer. Endless replayability. Qualities that made StarCraft, Warcraft III, and Diablo II the titans of their day. Evolving operating systems, hardware, and online services have made them more difficult to be experienced by their loyal followers or reaching a new generation.

We’re restoring them to glory, and we need your engineering talents, your passion, and your ability to get tough jobs done.

So if you like wearing many hats, know small teams are the most effective, and look forward to challenges that will create millions of new adventures for our players: we would love to hear from you.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Make gameplay first again on modern operating systems.
  • Create conditions for experiences that look as good as they play.
  • Own implementation and curation of features new and old.
  • Combat hacking to improve multiplayer.
  • Diagnose and fix all the things: crashes, deadlocks, overflows, heap corruptions, etc.

Now, this could easily be interpreted as Blizzard looking to remaster classic games, but it could very well be something as simple as making the games compatible with new Windows operating systems and offering a slight graphics overhaul like they did with World of Warcraft's character models.

We will likely hear more about this during BlizzCon.
