Blizzard making a ‘special announcement’ at Gamescom

Blizzard Entertainment, the makers of World of Warcraft and Diablo, have teased a "special announcement" that will be made during Gamescom on August 21.

Invitations to the event were sent out to media outlets today. It reads: "We're making a special announcement that's sure to capture the attention of the Heavens, Burning Hells, and all the shadowed places that lie between."

My immediate thought is Blizzard All-Stars, a MOBA-style game that takes the most popular characters from its biggest franchises — Warcraft, Diablo, and StarCraft — and pits them against one another in a lighthearted, nonsensical story providing the backdrop.

However, the company has a number of other projects also in the pipeline including Diablo 3 for consolesHearthstone: Heroes of WarcraftStarCraft 2: Legacy of the Void, and a next-generation MMO. Of course, there's also the possibility that the announcement is concerning World of Warcraft, Blizzard's long-standing MMORPG. With subscription numbers on the decline the special announcement could be some sort of free-to-play model.

The event will take place on August 21, the first day of Gamescom, at 11:30am local time. Gamescom takes place August 21-25 in Cologne, Germany.
