Blizzard officially announces StarCraft: Remastered, coming this summer

A classic is making a return. After long being rumored, Blizzard officially announced today that they are working on a remaster of the original StarCraft, which will be simply titled, StarCraft: Remastered. The game will come with cleaner visuals, revised dialog, and modern online matchmaking. StarCraft: Remastered will still retain the same great gameplay that made the original such a timeless classic and players will still be able to play via local LAN, just like the olden days.

LAN parties FTW.

Mike Morhaime, CEO, and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment said:

"StarCraft is a pure distillation of Blizzard’s DNA—its story, its balance, and all the little details reflect our long-running commitment to epic entertainment, and it’s been a staple in competitive gaming and esports for almost 20 years.

With StarCraft: Remastered, we’re modernizing the original game’s visuals, audio, and online support to ensure that players can enjoy StarCraft for another 20 years and beyond."

Here's a breakdown of what comes with StarCraft: Remastered:

  • Original StarCraft game and Brood War Expansion
  • Advanced matchmaking
  • Full connectivity to Blizzard’s gaming network for social features and updates
  • Cloud saving for campaign progress, custom maps, replays, and keybinds
  • Support for eight new languages
  • Preserved gameplay balance
  • Remastered Graphics
  • Revised Dialogue and Audio

In other words, it's just about everything we could have hoped for from a StarCraft: Remaster. There is currently no concrete release date or pricing details, but Blizzard says it will come out sometime this summer and announce the price at "a later date."

It's a good day to be a StarCraft fan.
