BlizzCon 2016: Warcraft 1 & 2 remasters are a no-go says Blizzard

Among the many positive announcements that Blizzard fans got to enjoy, it was inevitable that they would learn that there are indeed limitations that even a company such as this must abide by in order to get things done right and on time. Remasters for Warcraft 1 & 2 are not in the plans for Blizzard, and quite possibly never will be.

During a special 25th Anniversary panel, Blizzard co-founder Frank Pearce took the inevitable question from a super fan, only to let him down.

He said:

"We are fortunate enough to have all of the original source code and assets to everything we've done in the past. But actually, it turns out, it's really hard to access that stuff, unlock it, and figure out how it all works. Because we're old, we've forgotten.

We had some dedicated folks that were passionate about the idea, dig up the Warcraft 1 assets and code. They got it working and they got it running in a window. And I played it. Warcraft: Orcs & Humans was awesome for its time. I promise you, in today's world, by today's standards, it's just not that fun any more.

We have limited resources with everything that we choose to do. We would much rather work on amazing content for World of Warcraft for you guys, or for Overwatch, or evaluating what a future project pipeline might be and devote our time to that, rather than going back and digging up those fossils."

This isn't a knock on Blizzard, it's simply a reflection of the realities of game development and the old life long lesson that you don't always get what you want just because you want it. These things take time, and if you want Overwatch, World of Warcraft, Diablo and the other major games they maintain to stay as great as they are, some concessions have to be made.

However, it is worth noting that Pearce's fellow co-founder and company president, Mike Morhaime, chimed in saying, "At this time!"

So you're saying…..there's a chance. Probably not, though.
