A long-rumored fan wish has become reality yesterday during Sony’s PlayStation 5 event. The progenitor of the massively popular Souls franchise is getting a remake in the form of Demon’s Souls. The game that started an entire genre is going to be a PS5 exclusive. Check out the reveal trailer here!
Back in 2009, the Japanese developer From Software was firmly entrenched in a small niche, only known amongst hardcore gamers. They were mostly known for their Armored Core and King’s Field franchises. Neither of them was really widely known.
Then, the developer struck digital gold by creating a punishingly difficult action-RPG with Demon’s Souls. The game’s mechanics and design were so outlandish at the time that not even Sony realized what they had in their hands. You see, the game was exclusive for the PS3 but it was a slow burn. Only ever reaching cult status after word of mouth made its rounds through the web.
From Japan Studio and Bluepoint Games comes a remake of the PlayStation classic, Demon’s Souls. In addition to beautiful shadow effects and ray tracing, players can choose between two graphics modes while playing: one focused on fidelity, and one focused on frame rate.
By then, From Software made a deal with Bandai Namco and created the spiritual successor Dark Souls as a multiplatform title. The rest is history as they say. But the game that started it all remained shackled on a last-gen system, and as a Sony published game it also never reached other platforms.
This is changing now, with Sony putting the extremely talented folks over at Bluepoint Games in charge of remaking Demon’s Souls. Details about it are still sparse but the screenshots shared so far are extremely promising. Make sure to check them out in full screen to appreciate the upgrade. The jump in fidelity is outstanding and ought to be reason alone to replay the game.
Besides the jump in graphics, we also know that the game will feature two modes, allowing players to choose between the best visuals or performance. Very similar to some current-gen games that offer high-res modes at 30fps and lower-res at 60fps.
