Borderlands 2 ‘hacking’ issue patched, available now

Borderlands 2’s massive launch, one that culminated with 5 million units shipped, went relatively smooth, especially for a triple-A release. Some users reported trouble with lag, some reported XP issues, but overall Gearbox should be applauded for its continual effort to provide a grand experience.

One issue that’s recently plagued Borderlands 2, though, is an online “hacking” issue where players joining public matches with unfamiliar players would be thrown into hardcore mode unannounced. As some may know, when your character dies in hardcore mode, it’s gone forever, so a number of players were reporting losing their characters.

Today, though, Gearbox issued a statement on their forums announcing a fix for the game so that hackers could not change the game mode. The statement can be seen below:

You can download the latest update by launching Borderlands 2 while connected to Xbox LIVE. You will be prompted to install the update if you do not already have the latest version.

All updates are cumulative; you only need to install the most recent version to receive all updates.

11/6/12 Update

Added security to prevent data loss tied to malicious violations of the Xbox Live Code of Conduct through an unsupported third-party program.

With this fix players have the “all clear” signal to once again join public matches outside of trusted players you know or regularly play with. If any future problems arise, Gearbox asks that you contact their support page on their website.
