Boulder Dash creators developing free-to-play sequel

Boulder Dash is finally new again.

The classic puzzle-adventure game from 1984 is on the return. Original creators Peter Liepa and Chris Gray, the co-founder of Tap Star Interactive, are collaborating with original developer First Star Software to make the sequel. Boulder Dash: 30th Anniversary is due out this year for iOS, Android, PC, Mac, and consoles.

In the original Boulder Dash, players dug through caves to collect gems and diamonds and then sought an escape — all while avoiding deadly enemies and obstacles, such as avalanches and underground explosions.

First Star's co-founder and president, Richard Spitalny, has overseen development of nearly every Boulder Dash title to date (over 20 for different platforms). The developers have given the new Boulder Dash a complete visual overhaul, added a level editor, and introduced "ramps" for diagonal movement.

Players will be able to try portions of the game for free as the two starter characters, Rockford and Crystal. Level packs and other playable characters will be made available for purchase.
