Giancarlo Esposito revealed that he was offered a role for Marvel TV, but turned it down to hold out for a role in a Marvel Studios movie.
In a recent interview to discuss the DVD/Blu-ray release of 'The Jungle Book' (directed by Iron Man's Jon Favreau), Giancarlo Esposito addressed his involvement with Disney and their plans to potentially collaborate on a project for Marvel Studios. As it turns out, Esposito, famous for his role as the villainous Gus Fring on AMC's Breaking Bad, was offered a role for Marvel TV, but turned the part down in the hopes of being involved in a bigger Marvel Studios film project:
"I know the Marvel world exists on the Disney lot. I love those guys at Marvel. We've been trying to figure out how to collaborate on something. I'm hoping that it is something. They came to me with something for their television department, then I realized if I did that, I'd never be able to have that same character be in that film department. Once you're in a Marvel character in the television version, you have to stay in the particular character. They can't carry that over to film."
While it wasn't clear if he was asked to star in an ABC series like 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' or the now cancelled 'Agent Carter', or even one of the upcoming Netflix series' which would allow him to exercise his penchant for playing the haunting and violent adversary, it seems that the role was a bit of a risk if he planned to make regular appearances in the universe.
