PC users have been enjoying Pope’s inventive and mind-bending new game since last year. Exactly to the date of the console release, Return of the Obra Dinn came out on PC and immediately managed to become one of the highest-rated games on Steam. With an impressive 96% positive user review score, Pope has once again managed to create a hallmark title.
Even if the name Lucas Pope doesn’t ring a bell, his past work surely will. With his breakout smash hit Papers Please, Pope became one of the most well-known indie developers. Right when the indie scene managed to break out into mainstream success, Pope’s dystopian border-control simulator managed to wow gamers with a very unique gameplay and setting.
Return of the Obra Dinn follows this trend but is more traditional in some of its aspects, at least. Players are tasked with unraveling what really went down on a merchant ship whose crew either died or was lost. As an investigator, your biggest tools are logic and deduction. Either by inspecting corpses, where they died and objects, you’ll have to come to a logical conclusion what really happened on the ship. As a mystery title, you also have access to the Mememto Mortem. A mythical clock watch which lets you see the last moments of a deceased, who and what was around at that time.
If you have played Papers Please, you’ll no doubt see the similarities where the player gets a bunch of info and has to decide what it all means.
