Destiny 2 players were not happy to find base Destiny 2 content locked behind a paywall after the game's first expansion released last week. The Curse of Osiris expansion blocked player access to some of the in-game content in Destiny 2 thanks to a raised Power Level requirement. This isn't an entirely new phenomenon in Destiny (this occurred in Destiny 1 with new DLC drops), but something that added to the strain in the community.
Destiny 2 players spoke out against the locked content and Bungie has responded acknowledging that they have made "some mistakes." According to Bungie, content was separated so it could continue to stay relevant as Guardian Power Levels grew.
Bungie detailed to be aiming for the following goals when they separated “Normal” and “Prestige” modes:
In addition to this, Trials of The Nine and Iron Banner were meant to evolve with each Season and utilize new maps, which meant requiring the latest expansions to content. Bungie notes that they have always required that players own the latest expansion to experience all of the game, however, Bungie acknowledges that taking away items that launched with the game, like Trials of The Nine, was 'not right'.
A hotfix will be releasing later this week that will tweak some items, in hopes of making the game more accessible to all Destiny 2 players – whether they purchased Curse of Osiris or not.
Upcoming changes will reduce the Power Level for the Prestige Raid back down to 300, will open up Trials of The Nine to all players – unless it features a map from Curse of Osiris and the same goes for Nightfall. Community events, such as Iron Banner, Faction Rally, and The Dawning will be available to all players, and the Prestige Nightfall will remain exclusive to Curse of Osiris.
