Destiny may offer players a "living social universe in a persistent, dynamic world," but developer Bungie has confirmed that players are able to successfully play the game alone; however, they warn "you'll be having way less fun" if you choose to do so.
"As for playing solo, this question still comes to us a lot, and we're happy to answer it again," Bungie said in the latest mailbag. "The company you keep, the challenges you tackle, the war you wage will all be products of the choices you make.
"If you never want to have a cooperative or competitive experience in Destiny, and if you want to experience every cinematic in private, you'll have the option. We believe you'll be having way less fun, and we think you may find it really difficult to resist the pull of our cooperative vortex, but when we say we're building activities for every mood, that includes players who don't want to party up."
At this point its unclear what they mean by "having the option." Will you have the option to actually disable online elements, or simply not choose to party up with a group of players? From the E3 gameplay video, it seemed as if players were able to automatically join into your world. Looks like we'll have to wait and see for more details.
