Bungie took to Sony's press conference stage during E3 2015 to officially reveal the first major expansion for Destiny, The Take King. This is technically the third expansion for the game, but the first one that is big enough to require a disc for download.
The expansion will be bringing a number of new features to Destiny (information that was leaked before release); new Supers for each of the three classes, new gear, a new multiplayer map, and a new story plot that has players pitted against Orix, Crota's father who is looking for revenge.
All for the price of $40, just $20 shy of the price for a new game release. The price has been a point on contention for fans, because if you were to purchase the $60 bundle that Activision and Bungie are releasing, you get the base game, including all the DLC content and four exclusive emotes.
Essentially, legacy players have to pay more than new adopters.
Bungie's creative director Luke Smith has stepped forward to defend the content, saying that the value of the content is on par with the cost:
"Purchasers get a big, rich campaign. Fully voiced cinematics and the story of what happens when an angry alien god wages war on a solar system, all with a satisfying conclusion. You also have a new subclass to pursue and unlock. We also have a bunch of new strikes – we're not yet talking about how many – and a new raid. We're showing two new PVP modes and four PVP maps this week, and it's a fairly safe bet we're not done yet showing things off. So I'm fairly excited about the value proposition. We're calling this a major expansion because it is. We're giving people a whole new place to go, that new destination…"
Smith goes on to say that Bungie is "really comfortable with the value" they are bringing to players with The Taken King. That even existing players will be excited because the expansion "also comes with the Founder's pack with a new Sparrow, shader and emblem."
