Bungie puts an end to Destiny’s King’s Fall microtransactions once and for all

Earlier this week, Guardians who datamined the recent Destiny update 2.0.1 discovered files that seemingly hinted at more microtransactions for the game. The latest update for Destiny already implemented a new in-game currency, Silver, that can be purchased for real-life money to spend on in-game items like emotes; however, these new files suggested players will eventually be able to spend Silver on consumables that provide raid buffs — essentially turning Destiny into a pay-to-win game.

The two consumables — Valorous Light, which increases the chance of weapon and armor drops, and Heuristic Light, which will give players an additional Moldering Shard — were eventually dismissed by Destiny creative director Luke Smith who assured Bungie has no plans to sell consumables that buff King's Fall drop rates for Silver. So then what were those files?

In this week's Bungie plog post, the developer finally explained what was discovered were actually remnant files for in-game mechanics that were eventually scrapped.

"We’re not doing that. The files in question were actually first uncovered some time ago, well before the launch of Eververse Trading Company. They weren’t ever intended to be sold in exchange for Silver. What you’re seeing are remnant files for Three of Coins or Moldering Shard like items that would have been available from Xûr. Ultimately, the team decided that they didn’t have a place in the game, and cut them from the experience. You’re seeing some dust and echoes from the cutting room floor. "

Well, there you have it. Finally some explanation. Unfortunately, Bungie offered no comment on the supposed subclass level booster which also looks to be purchasable with Silver.
