Bungie updates Destiny’s Crucible matchmaking to bring more emphasis to connection quality

What's more important, skill or connection quality?

Bungie's major December update hit Destiny with a tweak that had Guardians getting into matches that favored skill over connection quality. Unfortunately, skill is somewhat dependent on connection quality and the update brought more issues than it did smoother gameplay.

Continuing their quest to find the perfect balance between skill and connection quality, Bungie has updated their Matchmaking settings to bring more emphasis to connection quality. The changes are currently live in Control, so feel free to test the update out and let Bungie know.

Taking to the Destiny forums, Bungie's community manager DeeJ explained the steps Bungie took to refine the gameplay.

Effective Immediately: New Matchmaking settings are live in Control.

We've taken additional steps to increase the emphasis on connection quality. Skill ratings will be less a factor in finding you a match. Lag will be even further diminished. Enjoying a game with your friends who are more/less skilled than you are will be easier, but your opponents will be more random, so you will stand a better chance of getting your ass kicked – or vice versa. There is still some form of protection to insulate the casual players among us from the most hardcore, but those considerations will have much less impact on the technical quality of the matchup.

Hopefully this tweak brings smoother gameplay to Guardians.
