The Burnout series of action racing games have been a mainstay during the PS2 era and solidified developer Criterion as masters of their craft. Naturally, this also got the attention of big publishers which culminated in the acquisition of Criterion by publisher giant Electronic Arts way back in 2004. After a few years, the studio decided to steer away from creating the classic racing games they were known for. Reorganization, EA designating Criterion to create Need for Speed titles and many layoffs led ultimately to the departure of studio founders Alex Ward and Fiona Sperry in 2014.
These two veterans started a new, independent development studio, Three Fields Entertainment soon after, and focused on what made them successful in the beginning. Arcade action with a hefty dose of destruction. After their first new title Dangerous Golf, an action-packed golf game with the goal of creating as high of a mayhem as possible, Three Fields Entertainment set out to create Danger Zone in 2018. A decidedly small project, taking cues from Burnout games’ destruction mode.
This newly announced sequel, Danger Zone 2 aims to be bigger and better, by taking the action out from crash test sites onto actual traffic. Players will have the chance to rake in maximum chaos on 23 levels across 17 locations around the globe and compete with their friends on leaderboards. Powered by the Unreal engine, advanced physics will let you create action-movie like scenes of destruction with a selection of 8 wildly different vehicles. From bog-standard sedans to trucks. Danger Zone will arrive on July 13th on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
Their second announced game, Dangerous Driving is going to be a competitive closed track action racing game. Similar to destruction derby, it’s not only about speed but also about inflicting pain to your opponents. Not much else is disclosed about Dangerous Driving but seeing the planned release Winter this year, we’re sure to receive further info in the coming months. It’s also going to come to PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
