As if politicians weren’t getting enough spotlight in our industry, one California State Senator has voiced his opinion on the video game industry, including those who partake in our form of media.
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Senator Leland Yee, who’s name was made popular by his publicized violent video game law that was struck down by the Supreme court in 2011, simply told gamers to “quite down” amidst the past few weeks of “anti-violent video games” discussion, publicized by those in Washington D.C., in response to the tragic Newtown, Connecticut shooting that took place this past December.
"Gamers have got to just quiet down," Yee said. "Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry's lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest."
While Yee’s comments seem to be focused around gamers being “biased” in this argument, it should be reminded that the beautiful thing about the United States is that all citizens have the right to voice their opinions in a matter, including violent video games. Still, it continues to amaze me that those higher powers at be continue to focus on a positive, money-making industry with restrictions that should be set and maintained by parents. Why haven’t we targeted a lack of parental guidance? Could it possibly be that we’re afraid to look ourselves in the faces, see we’re dropping the ball in situations like these, and reverse our mindset and begin acting as parents? Maybe.
