Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 runs smoother on Xbox One, looks prettier on PS4

You've got some work to do, Treyarch.

When it comes to the Black Ops 3 multiplayer that just wrapped up on the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, we can't help but ask – who wore it better? You might be thinking, "Tatiana, it doesn't matter which console is better – people own what they own." This is very true, but Activision ended their partnership with Microsoft and switched to Sony.

This means that the history of Call of Duty games catering to Xbox consoles first is over, all Black Ops 3 content will be available to PlayStation 4 players first. With a game series so deeply rooted in Xbox consoles, it's interesting to see how well they optimized the game for the PS4 (or how well they didn't ).

So, with a history of developing for Microsoft-first and now developing for Sony-first, how did Activision/Treyarch do? Long story short – things are more stable on the Xbox One, but prettier on the PS4.

In a breakdown from Digital Foundry, they found that both versions of the game did a good job in the multiplayer aspect, with the controls being responsive and 'perfect' for the game's twitched based shooted. However, the Xbox One had a more stable performance — the tradeoff for better performance on the Xbox One is that the game is more clear on the PS4.

As far as resolution and framerate go, the Xbox One ran at 900p, with a nearly locked 60FPS and the PS4 ran at 1080p with 60FPS that dipped into the 50s during intense multiplayer. What does this mean? Well, it depends on what you value; if you want more detail and the ability to see further more clearly, the PS4 is your go-to, if 60FPS is the name of your game – check out the Xbox One.

Keep in mind that this was an analysis of a beta!
