Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 was 2015’s best-selling game

Call of Duty franchise surpasses 250 million units sold

Not only was Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 the best-selling game for November and December, but its sales through just those two months were enough to propel it to become the best-selling game of 2015.

In light of the NPD's recent report, publisher Activision released a statement, claiming Black Ops 3 to be 2015's top seller "by a wide margin in both units and dollars sold through." In North America, specifically, Call of Duty was the best-selling franchise for the seventh year in a row; however, on a single-game basis, Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto 5 was the best-selling game of the year in 2013, according to NPD, which only tracks physical sales.

As a whole, the Call of Duty franchise has now topped 250 million units sold, Activision revealed.

"This achievement is thanks to the amazing experiences created by all of our development teams, and would not be possible without the incredible passion from the Call of Duty community," said Rob Kostich, Activison's president and general manager of the Call of Duty franchise. "We congratulate Treyarch on creating an incredibly engaging and an enormously fun game with Black Ops 3 and look forward to what's to come in 2016."

Interestingly, Black Ops 3 sold better on Xbox One than PS4, a slight surprise given the new exclusivity deal Activision has with Sony. In fact, Black Ops 3's first DLC pack — Awakening — will hit PlayStation 4 on February 2nd, about a month ahead of other platforms.

Looking even further ahead in 2016, Infinity Ward will handle development duties on this year's Call of Duty title.
