Call of Duty franchise surpasses 175 million copies sold

In honor of the 2015 Call of Duty Championship (obligatory "presented by Xbox") kicking off tomorrow, Activision has released an infographic detailing all sorts of impressive statistics for its amazingly popular first-person shooter franchise.

The most glaring stat, of course, is the number of copies sold. Since the series' debut over a decade ago, the Call of Duty games have combined to sell over 175 million copies. Activision did some math, coming to the conclusion that a copy of Call of Duty is sold approximately every two seconds.

It's certainly an impressive milestone, but it's not the best we've seen. Comparatively, Take-Two's Grand Theft Auto series has sold-in over 185 million copies.

On the gameplay front, the infographic also reveals that over 100 billion multiplayer matches have been played, while comparing that to the world's four major sports. Check out all the fun stats below.

While the Call of Duty franchise has shown signs of gamer fatigue recently, it continues to outsell the competition. For example, Advanced Warfare sales fell flat compared to previous entries in the series, but it was still the top-selling game of 2014. As long as Call of Duty remains atop the charts there's no reason to expect anything other than for Activision to continue it's yearly release schedule. The publisher has already confirmed that a new Call of Duty is on track to release later this year with Treyarch's turn up to the development plate.
