Call of Duty heading to space? Infinity Ward teases ‘incredible’ 2016

Assuming Activision is sticking to its three year deverloper cycle, that would mean Infinity Ward is up next for this year's Call of Duty title. Presumably, development on this year's installment is already underway, but we have no clue what Infinity Ward has up their sleeve. Or do we now?

Taking to Twitter to celebrate the New Year, Infinity Ward promised fans an "incredible" 2016. And in doing so, they might've clued us in to what we can expect.

Now the obvious clue here is "Let's do this," the signature line heard before multiplayer matches in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. However, their next tweet gives us a totally different clue, which seems a bit more realistic given the direction of the franchise.

That image, of course, harkens back to Call of Duty: Ghosts, in which a small portion of the game is experienced in space. It's unknown if this is a direct hint at what we should expect from this year's Call of Duty or if Infinity Ward is just being clever with a tweet. However, given comments made by former Infinity Ward producer Mark Rubin, I wouldn't rule out a trip to space in Call of Duty.

Back in 2013, Rubin commented on the future of the series and space as a potential frontier: "Yea. It makes sense. I wouldn't count it out. Everything's on the table. When we start a new game every possibility's on the table. If we think that it'd be cool to have a battle over Jupiter, sure. Why not?"

Granted, a lot could change in a few years, especially with the fact that Activision already has a space-shooter in Destiny. However, given how the scope of Call of Duty has changed over the years, it seems like the only thing to do is continue to push forward into the future with advanced technology and ridiculous game mechanics. Unfortunately, I think we've seen the end of "traditional" shooter mechanics.

Of course, this could just be me looking entirely way too hard into a single tweet wishing us a Happy New Year. Either way, it's always fun to predict a new Call of Duty game.
