It seems Infinity Ward has a knack for including shocking, possibly controversial sequences in their Call of Duty games. There was the "nuke" level in Modern Warfare. Maybe not controversial, but definitely shocking at first. Then they followed it up with the HIGHLY controversial "No Russian" level in Modern Warfare 2.
For those who don't remember, or didn't play it, that level consisted of you taking part in the murdering of a bunch of innocent civilians in an airport. It appears Infinity Ward has attempted to one-up their previous Modern Wafare 2 shock tactics with a scene many are equating as equally disturbing. Rather than partaking in the murdering of innocent civilians, the players must now watch it through the lens of a camera…the death of a child.
In the event the leaked video below is pulled, which is very possible given the negative publicity it's getting, I'll give you a quick rundown.
The video starts with a soldier named Wallcroft asking, "Where are the trucks?!" Then, the game cuts to a scene of a family of tourists visiting London and preparing to go to Big Ben. The entire sequence is shot through the lens of a handheld camera by the father. As the man, woman, and very young girl continue, you see a van pull up behind them (obviously the missing trucks). Shortly after, the girl goes to play with some birds near the truck and you can pretty much guess what happens next. Boom! The truck explodes, killing the entire family.
It may not sound particularly riveting, but at first viewing, it's quite shocking. Watch for yourself below.
Now, I don't know if I would consider this as controversial as the "No Russian" sequence, particularly because the gun isn't in your hands in this one. You aren't murdering the family or child. You only watch the sequence of events, helplessly. Is it disturbing, thought? Definitely.
So what do you think? Has Infinity Ward topped their controversial "No Russian" stage in Modern Warfare 2?
