Call of Duty: Modern Warfare coming this October; Will support cross-play

Infinity Ward and Activision are going all-out with this year’s Call of Duty, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. With a new photorealistic engine, a return to the most beloved subfranchise, cross-play, doubling down on an intense story, and much more, Infinity Ward is looking to reclaim their throne as the kings of the series.

Infinity Ward is doubling down on the controversial effect of the No Russian mission from Modern Warfare 2 by adding a very real and gritty story. Those who have seen the FPS in action have reported there are missions featuring a playable child soldier amongst other disturbing moments throughout the campaign.

It should be very clear that this is not a sequel, it is not a prequel. This is a brand new story unconnected to the original Modern Warfare trilogy BUT this game will feature characters we know and love like Price. The difference being is it’s not the exact same Price we served with for three games, it’s like a different timeline.

This will allow Infinity Ward to not only have more freedom with this story but also bring back characters who died like Ghost or Soap should they chose.

“This is an all-new Modern Warfare reimagined in every way,” said Dave Stohl, co-Studio Head, Infinity Ward. “We are creating an emotionally charged experience that’s inspired by the headlines in the world today, where the rules are grey and battle lines are blurred. Players will join a varied cast of international special forces and freedom fighters in gripping and heart-pounding missions through iconic European cities and volatile expanses of the Middle East. It’s intense, it’s exciting, and we can’t wait for our fans to play this October.”

In an effort to win back the hearts of lost fans, they’re being very upfront about what will and won’t be in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. There will be NO season pass and there will be cross-play between consoles and PC for multiplayer fans. As for lootboxes or microtransactions? Remains to be seen at the moment.

“Every design decision has been made with our players in mind,” said Patrick Kelly, Creative Director and co-Studio Head, Infinity Ward. “With the launch of Modern Warfare, we’re taking steps to unite the community. First, we plan for Modern Warfare to be played together across PC and console through cross-play support. Second, we’re eliminating the traditional season pass, so that we can deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players. This is just the beginning – there’s much more to come.”
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will also feature a co-op mode that sounds similar to spec-ops according to the description for the game’s trailer on YouTube.
“In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, players will be thrust into an immersive narrative spanning the entire game. Players can experience the ultimate online playground with classic multiplayer or squad-up and play cooperatively in a collection of elite operations, accessible to all skill levels.”
As for the marketing deal for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, PS4 fans will be treated to new content first as has been tradition for the last several years.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release on October 25th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC. We’ll likely see and hear more at E3 in a couple of weeks.
