Call of Duty: Modern Warfare corrupts data with newest patch (Updated)

Update: The update that botched Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been fixed, to a degree. According to Infinity Ward, anyone who clicked “Yes” when prompted to reset their stats, you have lost a few things but not your rank or core progression. You can view the specifics below.

  • If you were presented with the error prompt and did not click “Yes” and closed the game, your stats are still intact. Feel free to play as usual.
  • If you did click “Yes” – you most likely noticed your stats in the combat record, leaderboards, custom classes, and Operators were reset. Nothing related to your progression was lost, so your rank, XP, Battle Pass progression, weapon progression, unlocks, purchases, etc., are all still intact.

Infinity Ward is working on a fix to bring back peoples’ stats but you may lose any new stats you’ve acquired since these issues began. There’s no word on when this may be released.

The original article continues below.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare got a brand new update that includes a catastrophic issue: It deletes your saved data. The update was meant to bring new goodies like a Crossbow, 5 new loadout slots, and fix a number of bugs… while it does all that, it has also borderline broken the game.

Upon starting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, players are greeted with an error message that reads as follows: “Your data is corrupt or didn’t download properly. You must reset your rank and unlocks to continue.” The game then gives you the option to press yes or no, Infinity Ward insists that you do NOT press yes.

“We’re currently investigating an issue where players are getting an error prompt informing them their data is corrupt or did not download properly,” said the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare developer on Twitter. “Please do not select either option, but please hard close your application. Thank you for your patience while we work on this issue.”

We’ve reached out to Activision for comment on what the specific risks are and if the data can be recovered for those who may have clicked yes. We’ll update this story if/when we hear back.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is out now on Xbox One, PS4, and PC but pretty much unplayable at the moment if you don’t want your stats reset. You can click here to read our review.
