There has been a lot of tension building around Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s launch. While Activision and Infinity Ward are taking a lot of the right steps to make this new entry the best in years, many fans are waiting for the rug to be pulled out from under them.
In an act of transparency, Activision has come out and explained exactly how they plan to monetize Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Last week, we learned there wouldn’t be loot boxes but fans weren’t fully convinced given some rumors that were swirling. Since Activision has thrown out paid DLC with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, they still need to find a way to make some money on the game beyond the $60 entry fee. Enter the battle pass model.
The monetization model popularized by Fortnite will be coming to Modern Warfare. This will allow everyone to see exactly what they’re earning rather than buying a mystery box where you could get total garbage after paying a few bucks. It’s transparent, rewarding, and adds a new kind of progression.
Activision noted that “functional items” like weapons and attachments will not be sealed off behind the battle pass. All weapons and attachments can be earned through general gameplay without paying a dime. On top of that, there will be both a free and premium stream of battle pass items so you’re not locked out from all of the new content.
This marks another massive consumer-friendly move for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. With cross-play, the removal of paid DLC/season passes, no loot boxes, and the return of a beloved sub-franchise, Infinity Ward is looking to create one of the most fan-oriented Call of Duty games in years.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare releases on October 25th, 2019 for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
