Call of Duty: Warzone is Modern Warfare’s free-to-play battle royale

Call of Duty is one of the biggest franchises known to man and now it’s going free-to-play on PC and consoles with Warzone.

After a leak early this morning, Activision has revealed the new battle royale title. Call of Duty: Warzone is the franchise’s second battle royale mode but this one’s much more different. For starters, it’s totally standalone and free-to-play but is based on Modern Warfare’s engine and universe. It’ll fit 150 players on its massive map which is filled with both new spaces and classic Modern Warfare franchise maps.

It plays like the typical battle royale game with some twists. Call of Duty: Warzone has a meta involving respawns such as buying back in by earning cash (which can also be used to buy killstreaks) or fighting in the gulag. On your first death, you’ll be thrown into a gulag and forced to 1 v 1 another dead player for a chance at redeployment. Win and you can rejoin the battle. Lose and you’re out unless your squad buys you back in.

If you have a teammate with you, they can spectate from the upper level of the gulag and call out your opponent or throw rocks to stun them. Call of Duty: Warzone will also feature a mode called Plunder which is all about fighting for other player’s cash.

Players will be able to access Call of Duty: Warzone by either downloading it from the store for free or updating their copy of Modern Warfare. Non-MW owners will need to clear about 80 – 100 GBs off their console and those who have the 2019 shooter can expect to only need roughly 22 GBs for the update.

The game will unlock at 8AM PST tomorrow for Modern Warfare owners and 12 PM PST for everyone else. It should also be noted Warzone features the same cross-play and progression systems as the core game meaning you can play with anyone no matter what platform they’re on.

Call of Duty: Warzone will release on March 10th, 2020 for free on Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
