Capcom defends on-disc DLC for Street Fighter X Tekken

On-disc DLC is something of a sore spot for gamers. Why charge a fee for something that's already included on the actual game disc? Why not just release them as unlockable characters, or heck, why put them on the disc, and not just include them as DLC later on?

Apparently its a convenience of delivery according to Capcom. Not too long ago, hackers found 12 additional characters on the SFxT disc, all of which would be unlocked via paid DLC. This of course pissed fans off to the point of reporting Capcom to the Better Business Bureau.

Now Capcom decided to respond:

"At Capcom, we value our customers and make every effort to resolve customer complaints," read the full statement. "SFxT has an enormous amount of content, fully developed and available for play and enjoyment immediately on-disc. Given the 38 characters available for full play, as well as multiple play modes, SFxT provides great value for all players from day one.

"While Capcom is sorry that some of its fans are not happy about the chosen method of delivery for the DLC, we believe that this method will provide more flexible and efficient gameplay throughout the game's lifecycle.

"There is effectively no distinction between the DLC being 'locked' behind the disc and available for unlocking at a later date, or being available through a full download at a later date, other than delivery mechanism."

Essentially Capcom doesn't view this any different from asking fans to buy DLC from PSN or Xbox Live, and rather sees it as an efficient way for gamers to get their content quick.

Listen Capcom, I get you. DLC is a double edged sword and there is no doubt you want to make more money on each of your purchases, but there is also common sense. With the amount of hackers being able to hack their consoles, find secret files hidden away on discs, it's no surprise that eventually someone found the files on your disc!

If it's a question of morality, of putting files on the very disc you paid $60 for, and then asking for more money just to unlock it, I have to side with the fans here.

There is no way getting around DLC, but publishers and developers should be smarter with how they deliver it, and not include it on the disc.
