Capcom expects Resident Evil 7 to sell 4 million copies on release day

Resident Evil 7 releases in just over a month and despite the series getting slammed both by critics and fans these last few years, Capcom expects it to do big numbers on release day. Speaking with MCV, marketing director Antoine Molant boasted about how strong the game is being received via previews with press and demos available on Xbox One and PS4 with a PC version inbound.

Without diving into specifics, he says that the game's pre-order numbers are "very good" and that Capcom expects it to be one of their biggest games of the generation.

“Commercially, [Resident Evil 7] is probably the biggest Capcom game we are releasing on the new machines,” Molant told MCV.

“Ideally, we’d love to sell 4m on Day One globally. That would be great. Looking at what we see in the pre-orders and trends these days, we’re pretty confident we are going to get there. All the signs that we have seen across the market, whether it’s from the UK or from other territories, are very positive so far. We’re not sitting back and relaxing at all because we want to push that. The confidence is there.”

It's hard to tell if he means shipped or sold to consumers as those numbers can be pretty different. Shipped means those are the copies that stores received worldwide and have in stock, 4 million shipped would still be very good as it means the game is in high demand. Regardless, the game has been marketed very well so far but Capcom still has a lot to do if they hope to regain interest from fans as some hardcore members of the community aren't fond of the shift in tone and style the series has taken.

Resident Evil 7 releases on Xbox One, PS4, and PC on January 24th, 2017. The PS4 version will allow players to exclusively play the entire game in PSVR if they choose.
