Capcom Hopes to Prevent Another Resident Evil 5 Controversy

Capcom still feels the burns from the Resident Evil 5 controversy that erupted a few years back, and is taking steps to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

One of the game’s first trailers showed the game’s white protagonist being attacked by black zombies in Africa. The imagery didn’t bother some, but it did come across as culturally insensitive to others.

This seemed to be nothing more than a case of Capcom not taking into account some very painful parts of US history.

Capcom has learned from this past mistake and plans on taking a new approach.

Capcom senior PR manager Melody Pfeiffer spoke with Gamasutra and said, “Since the RE5 controversy, we have become much more aware of how important it is that we are part of the asset creation process early on so that we are able to have a say in the end product.”

She added, “We are also designing a lot of our own assets from this side of the pond, so that we are able to make strategic pieces of content that make sense for our market.”

Though it’s apparent that Capcom’s intent was never to offend, their oversight when running the original trailer may have been even more alarming to some.
