In what should be a surprise to no one, Captain America: Civil War has sold very well at the box office. So well in fact, that it is set to unseat Iron Man 3 as the fifth highest grossing opening weekend of all time. The movie has currently earned an estimated $75.3 million from its opening day, and Disney has upped its projected earnings total from $172 million to $178.8 million. It's quite possible that the movie could break that projection as well and end up in the $200 million range.
It's current earnings are behind only seven other movies, The Force Awakens ($119.1 million), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 ($91.1 million), Avengers: Age of Ultron ($84.4 million), Jurassic World ($82 million), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($81.6 million), Marvel’s The Avengers ($80.8 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($75.8 million).
The four movies that Captain America: Civil War is set to finish behind for its opening weekend total are Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($248 million), Jurassic World ($208.8 million), Marvel’s The Avengers ($207.4 million) and Avengers: Age of Ultron ($191.3 million).
Captain America: Civil War has been hotly anticipated by super hero fans everywhere, and in the wake of the largely negative reaction to Batman v Superman, the movie is in a prime position to steal some real thunder from DC. Plus, we (finally) get to see the new Spider-Man!
