For years, Sony has been developing a Venom movie in hopes to launch a Spider-Man cinematic universe akin to Marvel’s, only the Spider-Man cinematic universe may or may not include Spider-Man himself. We know, it’s confusing.
Originally planned to be in the universe of The Amazing Spider-Man, Venom will be an R-rated spin-off following one of Spider-Man’s biggest foes. It’s unclear how he’ll be portrayed as there’s a number of versions of him, both good and bad, but Tom Hardy will be playing him and it sounds like we know who he’ll be going toe to toe with.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, one of Spider-Man’s other big enemies, Carnage, will be the villain of the Venom film. He’s essentially a much stronger version ofvVenom but with a red suit and eviler partially due to the fact his human counterpart, Cletus Kasady, is a serial killer. Fans have wanted to see Carnage in a Spidey movie for a long, long time and now it’s sort of finally happening. Spider-Man actor Tom Holland is only contractually obligated to star in three solo Spider-Man films but Sony is planning to bring him into their own little universe.
There’s been a lot of confusion as to whether Sony’s universe is a part of Marvel’s universe as Spider-Man producer Amy Pascal sort of confirmed it was during a press junket for the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming. On the other hand, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said it wasn’t in the MCU in a separate interview prior to the interview with Pascal. We have no idea what’s going on and it sounds like Sony doesn’t either. This is becoming quite stressful.
Spider-Man: Homecoming will release on July 7th, 2017 and the Venom movie will release on October 5th, 2018.
