The other day, I reported that actor Eddie Murphy was shopping a Beveryly Hills Cop tv show. Well, the shopping is over. CBS has won the rights to the Beverly Hills Cop tv show that Eddie Murphy and Shawn Ryan are producing. The Sony TV project is described as "a continuation of the iconic Beverly Hills Cop universe," and CBS has given a pilot production commitment to the show. Whether it's good enough to earn a season will depend on that pilot.
With the right casting, it's hard to see this show not getting at least one season. The show will follow 90210 cop Aaron Foley, the son of Murphy's character Axel Foley. Aaron is working to "take down the criminal elements of the rich and famous," all in the shadow of his father. Murphy has already stated that he'll be in the pilot and "show up here and there." That's good, because you can't recast Axel Foley. And people won't watch unless he is in it sometimes.
The show was pitched as an hour-long police procedural with strong comedic elements. I'm thinking it might be a bit like The Good Guys, starring Colin Hanks and Bradley Whitford. But ya know, not be cancelled right away.
There's a lot of talk about who should be cast as Aaron Foley, and the two favorites being mentioned among people are Jay Pharoah and Donald Glover. Pharoah is a writer and actor on Saturday Night Live. He's best known for his impersonation of Denzel Washington and Will Smith on the sketch comedy show. He rarely appears in skits outside of ones that include those two, so I guess you can say he's underutilized. And I'm sure he'd leave SNL to do the pilot for a show for him to star in.
Donald Glover, on the other hand, plays the character Troy on Community — and it would be impossible to replace him. However, this could very well be the last season of Community. Regardless of outcry from a very passionate and vocal fanbase, the show has repeatedly faced rumors of cancellation for the past two seasons. Show creator Dan Harmon was fired after Season 3, but the show is continuing with Season 4. After that, however, is unknown. Donald Glover has a lot of fans and I could definitely see him as Aaron Foley. If not, he at least needs a chance at his own show somewhere. "Oh, we're just gonna make Spider-Man black?"
Who do you think would be a good choice to play Aaron Foley?
