Celebrity Deathmatch is returning to the ring

Thanks to a pilot order from MTV2, a new generation will experience the worldwide phenomenon that was Celebrity Deathmatch. Popular in the late '90s and early 2000s, the clay-animated show featured no-holds-barred fantasy fights between celebrities and other cultural icons.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, MTV2 has ordered a new pilot episode of Celebrity Deathmatch be made. Details were scarce, but the report claims the new version will again feature clay-animated fights, "reimagined for a social media world and hourly Twitter wars."

For those who weren't around when the series originally ran from 1998 to 2002 on MTV, the show featured hilarious, over-the-top fights between infamous celebrities. Matches were often very brutal, typically resulting in at least one of the celebrity's dying. The show was revived by MTV2 in 2005 as part of a Friday programming block that aired in 2006, but was canceled just a year later despite becoming network's highest-rated season premiere ever.
