Neill Blomkamp is all the rage right now. The director has done some amazing work with District 9 and Elysium, and his latest movie looks to continue that trend.
Chappie is Blomkamp's latest film, set in the near future where crime is patrolled by an oppressive mechanized police force. When on police droid, Chappie, is stolen and given new programming; he becomes the first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. As powerful, destructive forces start to see Chappie as a danger to mankind and order, they will stop at nothing to maintain the status quo and ensure that Chappie is the last of his kind.
The first trailer kind of showed a lighter side to the film, how this AI considered himself a person and deserved to be recognized as such, while people were looking to harm him. But as more trailers released, we saw just how much action there was going to be. According to early screenings and comments on Reddit, it's filled with swearing and it is very violent. And for that, Chappie has been rated R by the MPAA.
I'm excited that Chappie has an R rating, as I'm one for more mature titles. Both District 9 and Elysium were rated R, and there's nothing I hate more than when films neuter themselves to achieve a PG-13 rating in an attempt to get a bigger audience.
Chappie stars Hugh Jackman, Sigourney Weaver, Sharlto Copley and Dev Patel. It releases in theaters on March 6, 2015.
