Check out 20 Mins Gameplay of Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden

Publisher Funcom has released a shiny new gameplay demo for their upcoming X-Com-like tactical adventure game Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden. It’s the first time fans get to see the game in action under real circumstances, without tightly cut trailers. Check it out.

Developed by The Bearded Ladies, Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden aims to deliver a fun mix of stealth exploration and classic turn-based tactical combat. The team very much affirms their love and inspiration by classics in the genre like X-Com, but at the same time is doing a lot of new and different things to elevate their own game as its distinct own experience.

The aspect which makes Mutant Year Zero special is the interesting splitting up of gameplay into two phases, exploration and combat. Players will have the opportunity to scavenge the area for loot, gear and more, while also circumventing enemies. This stealth mechanic plays an important role in the preparation phase where positioning your small party of characters in advantageous spots can mean the difference between victory and utter defeat. Once you’re set, the combat phase begins where the second big pillar of gameplay emerges. Turn-based tactical combat.

This gameplay video shows a nice vertical slice of a typical mission, in which our freaky party of mutated duck, boar and human are trying to access a ship in hopes of rescuing a friend. What sticks out immediately, is the gorgeous presentation of a post-apocalyptic wasteland where everything is breaking apart and nature has taken over again. The beautiful isometric view makes the scene look like a surreal diorama of sorts.

Such exploration of areas is then interrupted when we approach enemies and the traditional turn-based combat takes point. All of our three heroes offers unique ways to fight the enemy and turn the flow of the battle to our favor.

Mutant Year Zero: Road to Eden is releasing this December 4th for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
