A Tumblr account, dedicated to all things Super Mario, has revealed one of the rarest animations found in the NES classic, Super Mario Bros. 3. According to the account, there is an animation that is only seen when you get the Hammer Suit while sliding.
The animation isn't the easiest to find, but it is still in the code for the game.
SupperMarioBroth (via Kotaku) described how to see the animation, as it still exists in the code.
"In Super Mario Bros. 3, Hammer Mario can’t slide down slopes, since he retreats into his shell when you duck. However, a sliding sprite for Hammer Mario still exists in the code and can be seen in this bonus room in level 6-10. If Mario is already sliding when he touches the Hammer Suit, he will display Hammer Mario’s sliding animation."
