The CGI adaptation of Angry Birds is coming to theaters and Sony Pictures have released the first images. With the amount of video game adaptations that fall flat on their face in film you have to wonder what story could be told. Well billions of app downloads later, everyone’s still trying to find out why these birds are attacking mostly unassuming pigs.
“The question Rovio gets more than anything is ‘Why are these birds so angry?’” says producer John Cohen (Despicable Me). “This is the origin story for how that conflict came to exist between birds and little green piggies.”
The film stars Red (voiced by Jason Sudeikis), Chuck (Josh Gad), and Bomb (Danny McBride) fending off their nest against a pork invasion led by Leonard (Bill Hader).
“(Red’s) a curmudgeon. We knew we had to find an actor who could say these things and still be charming, and that was Jason,” said Clay Kaytis, (previous credits include animation on Frozen and Wreck-It Ralph) who is co-directing the film with Feral Reilly. (storyboard artist for films including Spider-Man 2, Space Jam, and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs)
The rest of the cast is some of the more popular comedians today including Hannibal Buress, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kate McKinnon. The Angry Birds film adaptation was written by Jon Vitti of The Simpsons.
The Angry Birds Movie comes to theaters on May 20, 2016. Check out stills from the film below released by Entertainment Weekly.
