‘Chill out internet’, Borderlands 3 is not in development yet

Everybody clamoring for more news about Borderlands 3 needs to just "chill out". Gearbox Software founder Randy Pitchford has stressed, via Twitter, that all current focus is on Borderlands 2 DLC, along with some already-announced titles like Aliens.

Pitchford was responding to rumors that arose earlier this week when Borderlands 2 lead writer Anthony Burch mentioned the team was "brainstorming ideas" for Borderlands 3. To think, it hasn't even been a month since the release of Borderlands 2 and we are already talking sequels? My, my, it's amazing how impatient gamers have come to be…

"Chill out internet. No one has started working on a sequel to Borderlands 2," Pitchford said. "It’s fun to talk and think, but actual effort is focused on Borderlands 2 DLC, Aliens, etc.”

“Clean and Simple truth: The only Borderlands related game development work going on right now is for Borderlands 2," Pitchford added. "I expect that to change at some point, but that is the state of the box at this moment in time."

"Anthony was speaking to his thoughts. We're all thinking about it and it's exciting to think. But there's no project – no actual effort," he concluded.

The key word that secretly hidden there, which Pitchford didn't actually say but alluded to is "yet". Although there's no project now, the success of Borderlands 2 definitely lends itself to a third title. For now, it appears Gearbox has its hands full with developing DLC for it.

First up, arriving October 16, is the new Mechromancer class. Free for members of the Borderlands 2 Premiere Club, the Mechromancer controls a large mechanized robot known as D374-TP. In addition to the Mechromancer DLC, Gearbox has plans for four additional add-on campaigns, each featuring several hours of gameplay that will "introduce new adventures allies, enemies, and environments".
