Chris Hemsworth has been confirmed to return for ‘Star Trek 4’

George Kirk will make his triumphant return!

Chris Hemsworth has been confirmed to return to the Kelvin-verse for the still to be titled 'Star Trek 4'.

'Star Trek: Beyond' finally hits theaters nationwide this weekend. With hype for the newest installment reaching a fever pitch, news about the future of the franchise is already being dropped. It was just announced that not only would the crew of the Enterprise be returning for a confirmed sequel, but 'Thor: Ragnarok' and 'Ghostbusters' star, Chris Hemsworth, would be returning to the role of Captain Kirk's father, George Kirk.

It's not clear what Hemsworth's involvement will mean for the plot of the sequel considering George Kirk met his demise before the opening titles of 'Star Trek' in 2009. Most would assume this should be nothing more than a flashback/mind-meld or a piece of lost footage that Jim Kirk stumbled upon. As it turns out, George will in fact be crossing paths with his son in some capacity. Knowing Star Trek, this could mean any number of things: time travel, multiverse, clone, etc., all of which are possible in this mythos.

Justin Lin, director of 'Star Trek: Beyond', has yet to be announced as a returning director, although J.J. Abrams is slated to return as a producer, along with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay set to write the screenplay.
